Discussion: A look back at 1.02 “The Thing You Love Most”

So episode 2 aired in Australia this week. Er, got a bit chatty with stuff I noticed this time around… I have a feeling rewatching all the eps (now that I’ve seen the full season) will have this effect!

Interesting point I’d somehow forgotten – the Evil Queen (from here on in, ‘EQ’) got The Dark Curse from Maleficent after they’d traded for the sleeping curse, but EQ originally got it from Rumplestiltskin. Interesting also that Maleficent didn’t know WHO the Dark Curse came from. EQ says to Rumplestiltskin in a later scene: ”That curse you gave me.” So Rumplestiltskin GAVE the curse to EQ. I can’t imagine that EQ wouldn’t have had to give him something in return. After all, as they’re so fond of telling us, ‘all magic comes with a price’. So what was the price when she initially came into possession of the curse? How did EQ get it the first time? I don’t think it’s been mentioned, has it?

Rumplestiltskin makes it clear that the child of Charming and Snow is the key to breaking the curse, but EQ doesn’t know exactly WHO that unborn child is. Although, it could be said that EQ knows the child is female as Snow says (when the curse hits the castle) “She got away.”

Henry: “If she finds out who you are, it would be bad.” I’ll have to go back and find out when exactly WE find out that Regina finds out how important Emma is. Mind you, after that final scene with Mr Gold (more on that below), I think her spidey-sense was probably tingling.

Considering the outfit and hairstyle EQ has when she casts her father’s heart into the fire and starts the curse, I’m going to say that the curse hit everyone within a day or a few days at most. We saw in the pilot that she appeared to be ‘bringing the curse’ with her as she rode in her carriage toward Snow and Charming’s castle, and presumably they went from fairytale world straight to Storybrooke. Yet in this episode, she had time to have a headstone created for him, as she lays a flower at his grave… although, I suppose she could have done that with magic. Considering that she came back from Rumplestiltskin’s cell straight to her father and then killed him, she couldn’t have made the headstone ahead of time.

Mr Gold offered to take care of Regina’s ‘problem’ with Henry’s mother. But we know from the series that he wanted Emma to break the curse. That’s why Rumplestiltskin asked for the child’s name – so he’d know when it was time. Here’s an AU idea: What would have happened if Regina had taken Mr Gold up on his offer to get rid of ‘the problem’? Anyone wanna fic that? ;)

More spoiler-y talk (references to episodes later in the season) under the cut. Please post in the comments with your thoughts and opinions! :)

Discussion: A look back at 1.01 “Pilot”

I’m taking the opportunity to rewatch the episodes as they air on the local network here. Just from the pilot, there are a couple of things I noted that made me go “Hmmmm…”.

  • Just after Emma crashes her bug, we see the pages of the book flip open and it shows an image of the Caterpillar from the episode “Hat Trick” .
  • After Regina says goodbye to Emma (supposedly for the last time), she comes down the stairs and stands in front of her mirror with The Book. You can clearly tell now that she’s panicking – her secret is on the verge of being revealed.

There were a couple of other things that sounded weird having now watched the entire season. I’ve placed these other spoilers behind the cut as I go a bit more in-depth.

Meta: Character names – Dr Whale

I originally posted this about 5 weeks ago on tumblr. Half of the post is no longer relevant as we know Sheriff Graham’s true identity… but Dr Whale is still something of a mystery.

After watching 1.03 I’m thinking Dr Whale is the Big Bad Wolf. Reasons?

  • His interest in Ruby, while he was on his date with Mary Margaret.
  • His surname.

Ruby = Red Riding Hood. Obviously.

His surname? It’s interesting that one of the theories of evolution has whales evolving from a terrestrial wolf-like creature. I swear to God – I googled ‘whale wolf’ (yes, I am that sad) and you’ll be surprised what pops up. Of course, I’m not sure how current those particular scientific theories are but… *shrugs*

Just sayin’…

Meta: Regina, Henry and Emma… and Mr Gold

Having rewatched episode 1.02, I’ve now been reminded of the part Mr Gold played in Henry’s adoption. Which makes my previous meta post about Regina, Henry and Emma kind of… irrelevant.

So things we know:

  • Henry was born in Phoenix, Arizona.
  • Henry was adopted by Regina when he was 3 weeks old.
  • Mr Gold was the one who found Henry for Regina. (This alludes that Mr Gold knows exactly who Emma and Henry are… and what that means for the curse.)
  • At the end of episode 1.02, Regina realises there’s more than just a coincidence that her adopted son is Emma’s biological son, and that Mr Gold had a hand in it.
  • Also at the end of ep 1.02, Mr Gold tells Regina “you think you know exactly who she (Emma) is”, inferring that Regina remembers everything pre-curse including the part to be played by the child of Snow and Charming.

Mr Gold also appears to remember the backstory with the curse and who he ‘really’ is… so my question is WHAT IS HIS ANGLE?

In the fairytale world, Rumplestiltskin was locked up and obviously not enjoying that. In the real world, Mr Gold has ‘comfort’ (per Rumplestiltskin’s request of the Evil Queen). WHY would he risk that by bringing in a direct link (baby Henry) to the only person who could defeat the Evil Queen (ie Snow and Charming’s child, aka Emma)? Isn’t it in his best interest to keep things as they are in the real world?

I’m curious even moreso because in the first episode (when Snow and Charming go to visit Rumplestiltskin in his cell) he says “The infant is our only hope.” The ‘our’ is the bit that really intrigues me. That and his “Get the child to safety.” The Mr Gold / Rumplestiltskin character really confuses the heck out of me. I simply can’t decide whether he’s good or bad… or does he live to create mischief and mayhem?

One last question… Mr Gold appears to be the kind of person who has a lot of connections and knows a lot more than he needs to (or should know). Emma told Regina in episode 1.01 that Henry’s father doesn’t even know he exists.

Does Mr Gold know who Henry’s biological father is?

Meta: Regina, Henry and Emma

I was just having a think back over the first episode that I rewatched last night. In particular about Regina, Henry and Emma and their circumstances.

The first question is DOES Regina love Henry? She says she does. As I noted in last night’s blog post though, Emma’s lying-spidey-sense may have been going off when Regina confirmed her love for Henry. Of course, considering Regina is Mayor and Henry is a 10-year-old boy she can’t appear to be indifferent or uncaring… but does she actually love the boy? Henry seems to think that she doesn’t.

My second question is… how on Earth did Henry come to be with Regina??

Let’s assume for a moment that Regina definitely does remember everything about the fairytale world and who she really is. If that’s the case, she would know that Snow and Charming’s baby (Emma) was predicted to be the ‘saviour’ of the fairytale world. This would also explain her pretty full-on “get lost!” vibes to Emma about leaving Henry and Storybrooke alone or Regina would destroy her.

We also know that Regina adopted Henry when he was three weeks old. How’s the coinkydink that the baby of the one person who could ruin Regina/the Evil Queen’s plans is the baby Regina adopts?

Did she know Henry’s parentage? Or was that just a fluke?

And if she DID know… WHY would she have chosen to adopt him, the child of the person prophesied to bring about her downfall? Was it all rolled in with taking away the happy endings?

Of course, this show is by the LOST writers. If there’s one thing that show taught me…

THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES.
